Ben Jacob's Eagle Project

Posted on Aug 31 2023 - 1:54pm

My name is Ben Jacob, I am currently a Senior at Plano Senior High School. I’ve been a member of Boy Scout Troop 1001 in Richardson, Texas since 2017 and I’m very excited to be starting my Eagle Scout Service Project. This project will be serving the Adaptive Training Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to empower the human athlete, restore hope through movement, and redefine the limits of individuals with disabilities. This non-profit has truly made a life changing difference in many different people’s lives including my own and I am beyond excited to have an opportunity to give back to this organization. This non-profit offers customized adaptive training and mental health support to veterans and civilians with life-altering injuries.

A little bit about the project: The project will be building customized storage lockers for a therapy room for the gym. The "ReCharge Room" is the therapy room inside the gym where the class of athletes sits together and are taken through mindfulness, breathing work, and meditation before and after each workout. The storage lockers being built for this project will be a much needed piece of furniture for the ReCharge Room that will include storage cubbies for each of the athletes as well as space for the A/V equipment to be mounted in a safe way and allow safe movement throughout the room.

Not only will this project benefit the athletes and staff of the Adaptive Training Foundation, but it will allow the Scouts involved in building the project to fulfill part of the Scout Oath which challenges them to ‘do my best to do my duty to God and my country’. The majority of the athletes served at ATF are veterans, so this project provides an incredible opportunity to give back to those who sacrificed so much to ensure our country’s freedom.

Please consider donating and/or volunteering on this project as it would go a long way to helping ATF further their impact and growing the character of the young men and women working on this.

If you would like to donate here is the GoFundMe link: ReCharge Renovation

My workdays are Saturday September 2nd and Monday September 4th.  Please sign up for a shift (or two) HERE.

Thank you

Conservation Project for Canyon Creek Wetlands Wildscape -- Sat Aug 26th 8AM (come and go from 8-12)-- Service hours

Posted on Aug 24 2023 - 9:58pm
The Conservation project will be Saturday August 26 beginning at 8:00am (you can come/go anytime between 8-12). We will meet at the Canyon Creek Wetlands and Wildscape behind the Hilton Garden Hotel (1001 W George Bush Pkwy). Scouts and parents can park in the back and walk down the hill to the sidewalk between the marsh and the grassy hilly area. Ms. Koch, the Texas Naturalist, will have a small table set up with some tools and instructions. This is also where scouts can turn in their City of Richardson parent permission slip.

The goal will be to clear a large of the grassy hill of invasive plant species as much as possible. Afterwards scouts will scratch native grass and wild flower seeds into the dirt. If enough people, scouts may be asked to hand water previously planted wild flowers.

Each scout will need to bring:
1. hand sheers (small garden clippers) to clip off the scabiosa seed stalk and floret just below dirt level
2. a pair of garden gloves ( this will keep them from getting blisters but also minimize the chance they run across a small stinging plant we have out there.
3.a hat.
4. at least one large bottle of cool water to drink from and stay hydrated.
5. a signed City of Richardson permission slip.
6. a jug of water, if possible, to help water flowers.

It is  highly recommend to put bug repellent and sun screen on before arriving (specifically for chiggers). It is also recommended to wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt.

Parents and family members are welcome to join scouts! This ongoing project is a great way to earn conservation or service hours for rank advancement!!! Hope to see you there!!!
Please print, fill out and sign this COR volunteer waiver and bring it with you.

Adult registration requirement

Posted on Aug 24 2023 - 9:31pm

Reminder that all active adults must be registered with the troop in order to camp with or be engaged with the scouts for more than 72 hours (not consecutive).  If you aren't registered, you will not be allowed to camp with the troop. No exceptions will be made.

Individual emails went out this week to all adults who are NOT registered with the troop asking them to register.  There has been NO response so far from any of the people those emails were sent to.  This is going to be a serious problem when the new scout year gets kicked off, so please take care of it now.

Please reach out to Jill Teagarden at membership@troop1001.org if you have any questions or need further information.
