Over the summer, Troop 1001 began supporting a patriotic partnership between the Canyon Creek Homeowners Association and the Richardson Central Rotary Club. Residents of the Canyon Creek area may lease a flag for their front lawns for five holidays each year. The Rotarians procure the flags and arrange to have them set before each holiday and picked up and stored afterward, enlisting other area service organizations to help set and remove the flags. Troop 1001 took on part of the challenge for the Independence Day holiday and will repeat for Labor Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Flag Day.

fouth_july_2009_003The Rotary Club shares part of its income from the program with the troop, making it a fund raising activity for us. However, it is so much more. It provides a valuable community service and gets the troop out into the neighborhoods near our meeting place where residents can get a glimpse of the good we do.

Russell and Sue Haas have volunteered to coordinate the flag program for Troop 1001. Thank you! The Haases will organize the volunteer effort and ensure that vehicles and drivers are scheduled. Everyone in the troop, parent or scout, is asked to support this program on at least one holiday over the course of a year.

The next holiday, Labor Day, is fast approaching. Troop 1001 will be setting flags this Saturday, September 5 starting at 9 am. The flags will remain up through September 11, Patriot Day and we will pick them up on September 12, time TBD.

Troop 1001 has been assigned two routes in the Canyon Creek area and we will need a minimum of 4 Scouts and 2 adults for each route which will have to install and later pick up approximately 100 flags on each route. The more crews the faster the project. Many hands make light work.

We especially need adults to provide a large car or van to transport the Scouts and ideally a pickup truck to carry the flags.

Parents, please volunteer for this by calling Russell and Sue Haas at 972-783-8412 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for more information. Pickup trucks are especially needed. Scouts, contact Ethan H. at the same number to volunteer.
