Late Breaking News

Drivers are needed to transport scouts to the campsite Friday evening and bring them back Sunday. We are 18 seats short. Please contact Rick Goad to volunteer. The campsite is only about 30 minutes away in McKinney.

In the interest of safety, all derby car riders must wear protective headgear. Bring a bicycle or skateboard helmet.

Be Prepared!

On the Calendar Mon, Feb 2

  • PLC Meeting, 7 pm
  • Troop Committee Meeting, 7 pm

scoutmaster_patch_color Hello all Scouts and Scouters,

Derby Day is upon us! Friday we will assemble at 5:30pm at the TBC for our next campout to be held at Erwin Park in McKinney, Texas. We will share a morning of orienteering followed by a great afternoon racing in cars designed by the next generation of brilliant engineers and creative artists. My hope is the devices devised move safely down the hill while expressing the full creativity of each patrol that came together during the last month to build their derby cars. All scouts should remember to pack their compasses for the orienteering course. Please see January Campout: Derby Cars and Orienteering for a more complete pack list (part of the permission form), weather link, and map to the campsite. Plan for cold and remember to bring a water bottle.

The Patrol Leaders Council has asked that we publish the schedule so non-camping parents may attend this exhilarating event:

  • Saturday January 31, 2009:
  • 7:30 am Bugle
  • 7:31 am Breakfast
  • 9:00 am Chuck boxes closed (which also implies clean)
  • 9:30 - 11:30 am Orienteering Course
  • 11:30 am Lunch
  • 12:45 pm Chuck boxes closed (which also means clean)
  • 1:00 pm Race preparation begins. Final axle lube and break check along with wheel alignment may take place during this time. Helmet awareness is recommended.
  • 2:00 pm Races Begin! We will ride, coast and slide anything we can as time permits and boredom forbids.
  • 5:00 pm Dinner
  • 6:30 pm Cleanup and final inspection of very clean chuck boxes.
  • 7:30 pm Campfire
  • 9:00 pm Cracker-barrel
  • 11:00 pm Lights out & sonobulous sonorous sounds from the adult section of camp while the scouts continue to work on the challenging aspects of the square-knot and the clove hitch.

The only possible variation to this schedule will be brought about by the wonders of nature. Should the weather be something other than the anticipated 50 degree afternoon and 35 degree overnight we will be returning home Saturday night, just as we did last year during that unexpected cold snap. Our current plan is to return home to the church on Sunday at 12:45 pm. We will call using available cellphones should our plans change.

Monday night February 2nd is a PLC Meeting as well as a Parent's Troop Committee meeting. There is no regular troop meeting following a campout. New parents please attend: many hands make light work. A boy led troop works best when we all help lighten the load.

I look forward to seeing you at the church Friday evening at 5:30pm. Until then,

Yours in Scouting,
Scoutmaster Coon
