Boy Scout Troop 1001

Troop 1001's activities include weekly troop meetings, patrol meetings, monthly campouts, Courts of Honor twice a year, service projects, and occasional fundraising activities.

Weekly Troop Meetings

Troop meetings are held Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. at Trinity Bible Church, 400 Campbell Road in Richardson. The meetings are planned and conducted by the boy leaders under the guidance of the adult Scoutmaster and with the help of Assistant Scoutmasters who work with individual patrols.  The meetings regularly include a presentation, games, patrol planning, advancement work and Scoutmaster conferences and Boards of Review.  There is usually no meeting the Monday after a campout.

Patrol Meetings

From time to time, preferably on a monthly basis, patrols have patrol meetings, help carry out a service project or practice their Scouting skills. These meetings are usually held in one of the Scout’s homes.

Campouts

Our troop has a campout each month August through May, plus a week-long summer camp early in June. A lot of fun activities are enjoyed at campouts, including hiking, cooking, rappelling, rifle and shotgun shooting, rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, and much more. Each monthly campout is planned at the troop meetings and or the patrol meeting where the Scouts create a meal plan and activities for that particular campout.  Each patrol and how economically they have planned their meals determine campout meal expenses.  The meal expense generally costs $10-$12 per scout and is collected by the Patrol Leader at the troop meeting before the campout.  It is important for Scouts to attend campouts, and Scouts should prepare for the campouts on their own as much as possible. There are, however five critical items that Scouts must have for each campout, both for their own well being and to prevent them from placing an undue burden on the rest of the Troop. These are a canteen of water, a poncho, warm clothes, a first aid kit, and a sleeping bag.  For a complete camping checklist, click here.

Court of Honor

Twice a year, the troop conducts a Court of Honor which enables parents to observe the awarding of merit badges, achievement of rank and other advancements to their sons.  These are special occasions because they represent success in Scouting.  Through hard work and dedicated efforts, Scouts advance through ranks and obtain merit badges and other awards.  In the fall, the Court of Honor is held during a campout at which families can camp with the troop and the Scouts prepare a feast.

Service Projects

One of the most appreciated activities of Scouting is the service project. The Scout Oath calls on Scouts to "help other people at all times," so Troop 1001 participates in many group efforts to help others, particularly in the communities where we live. We have helped with food drives, provided landscaping for churches, collected clothing for the needy, painted and renovated various structures, picked up trash at parks, and much more. Also, Scouts help other Scouts who, as part of their Eagle rank requirements, must complete a major service project.

Fundraising Events

To pay for the basic operation of the troop, equipment, supplies, and the merit badges and rank advancements that scouts earn, Troop 1001 has several major fundraising efforts every year. Popcorn sales through Circle 10 in the fall is a major fundraiser. Additionally, in the spring and fall, our Scouts and their parents work at two art festivals organized by the City of Richardson. Participation in fundraising by a Scout is important to his development because these events allow him to earn a significant portion of his Scouting expenses. By earning a portion or all of his expenses, a Scout learns self-reliance and enjoys a sense of accomplishment.
