Boy Scout Troop 1001

For the campout this Friday remember to be at the church by 5:30 so we have sufficient time to pack the trailer. We plan to leave at 6:00pm. Please eat or pack a sack dinner so we can make camp early.

At the campout we will be doing climbing and pioneering so it wouldn't hurt to brush up on your knots. Two very important knots are the Figure eight knot and the grapevine knot. If you do not know these this site will help you a lot: http://www.realknots.com/knots/index.htm.

We have the climbing tower reserved for Saturday morning. We will be using our pioneering skills to make a catapult for a punkin' chunkin' patrol contest.

Remember to bring your raingear because it is November at Cherokee, and it is almost always wet out there.

One more important reminder, the Court of Honor is Happenning on December Ninth. Look in the PLC web updates for more information as it is released.

Scouts: your last chance for a Board of Review before the December Court of Honor will be this weekend's campout at Camp Cherokee.  So if you're trying to advance in rank, be sure to attend the campout and bring your Scout Handbook and full Class A uniform.

This is a brief reminder there is a Troop Committee meeting tonight at the TBC at 7:00pm sharp. An agenda for the meeting is attached.

There is a meeting of all troop quartermasters and patrol quartermasters tonight at 5:00pm at the TBC to organize and load the trailers. Patrol leaders please make sure your patrol quartermaster attends or delegate to another member of your patrol.

The November 10-12 campout takes Troop 1001 to the Circle 10 Council's Camp Cherokee at Clements Scout Ranch near Athens, TX. The focus of the weekend will be climbing, C.O.P.E., and pioneering.

As usual, all scouts are asked to meet at Trinity Bible Church no later than 5:30 pm on Friday, November 10 in Class A uniform. We intend to be on the road by 6:00 pm. We will be returning by 12:30 pm Sunday to the hospital parking lot across Campbell Road.

Scouts should come prepared with:

• Signed permission form
• Backpack or duffel with personal gear (see permission form for a packing list or see this article)
• Class A uniform (worn)
• Knowledge of the weather forecast
  
• Sack dinner
• $10 for patrol food (unless already paid) plus a bit for pit stops on the road

At tonight's meeting we are going over how to set up and take care of tents. We will going over all of the basic knots and lashings that are used in basic pioneering structures.  The troop meeting will also include a session teaching the scouts how to properly set up lanterns and lantern safety.  Finally we will be going over what you are supposed to bring to a campout to be prepared for all types of weather.

All Popcorn monies and forms are due this week. Please turn them in to the Popcorn Colonel Mrs. M.

Hello all Scouts and Scouters,

Tonight there will be a 6:00pm Citizen in the Community Class. All registered class members should plan to attend with their assignments from the last meeting. There is also a PLC meeting at 7:00pm at the Trinity Bible Church. If you are a PLC member please attend.

The next campout is the last opportunity for rank advancement before the fall court of honor. Scouts please review your status with your patrol leader during the next few meetings and make sure he has signed off on all of the items you have completed to date. If you have unfinished merit badges you would like to earn, be sure and see Mrs. B. at the next full meeting Monday October 30th to let her know you are finishing up requirements for the award.

This weekend's campout at Quail Alley was an exceptional event. The shotguns were a blast, we were hooked by the fish, Webelo Wesley hit a bullseye in archery and the rocket event included a mentos/diet coke opening ceremony. Fun, food, wind and sun were enjoyed by all.

Thank you to all adult scouters that made this event possible including a special thanks to Mr. Raney, Kenneth L., Noah W. and Phil M. for working in advance of our arrival to prepare the campsites and shooting range areas.

Every event was well attended including the water propelled rockets which turned out to be quite fun. There were many creative designs which demonstrated that there are many ways to solve a problem. In this case, the question was how to design a rocket from a 2 liter bottle which will remain aloft the longest. There were as many solutions as there were entrants in the contest. Congratulations to all that participated.

I look forward to seeing many of you tonight at the TBC.

Hello all Scouts and Scouters,

I hope you are all preparing for a great weekend of shooting sports, fishing and rocketry at Mr. Raney's ranch.

If your scout has a dutch oven that he took home to clean, it should be returned tonight (Wednesday) between 6-7pm at the trailer loadup or if he is not part of the quartermaster team responsible for load up tonight then he may bring it back on Friday.

On Friday, we are assembling at 5:30pm to load up for Quail Alley. We need to leave by 6:00pm. If possible, please be early.

We need 20 2-liter plastic bottles for the rocketry event. If you can provide some, please let me know via email so we can purchase what is not provided by your contributions.

The cost for this campout is $15 per person. The additional $5 covers the cost of Shells, Clays, BB's, Arrows and Rocket components. If your scout is purchasing food for his patrol he should be reminded that Breakfast and Lunch on Saturday will be prepared and served by Patrol.

Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will be a departure from our normal method. For dinner the patrols will prepare their own side dishes and desserts while making enough extra to cover five (5) other individuals not in their patrol (Patrol + 5). The fried fish entree will be provided by the adult patrol for the entire camp at dinner.

Sunday breakfast will be served buffet style for the entire camp, while each patrol will contribute enough food for the members of their patrol. Keep in mind that you may not eat what you bring since it will be prepared as a buffet. No Poptarts Please. The quartermaster team will be responsible for the common buffet preparation.

Several scouts have indicated they need to return as early as possible on Sunday. We will be breaking camp early and plan to depart by 9:00am for a 12 Noon arrival. We will drop off scouts and personal gear in the hospital lot while the quartermaster team deals with the small equipment trailer at the scout shed.

Hello to all Scouts and Scouters,

The time is here again to help artists show their wares. The semi-annual Cottonwood Arts Festival is this weekend, October 6th, 7th & 8th. Twice each year we have the opportunity to help the City of Richardson put on this festival.

To earn our contracted fee with the city WE provide the labor to setup and break down the booths, WE sell water, WE assist the artists with booth breaks and WE provide security in the beer garden. WE really need some strong backs on Friday 9am to close for setup and Sunday from 6pm to 10pm to load out. In between those times WE provide the other services I have listed.

But there is no WE without YOU. Please look at your schedule and plan to spend at least 4 hours (or more) helping Troop 1001 earn almost one-half of our annual operating budget this weekend. One way to think about the importance of these three days in the fall and three days in the spring is that in terms of revenue it represents thousands of pounds of popcorn sales.

I would rather enjoy a day in the park looking at art rather than selling thousands of pounds of popcorn but maybe you are different than me in that way.

Don't let your troop down! When a leader calls you this week, please sign up, both scouts and parents, for several time slots over the course of the weekend. We especially need all the hands we can muster for the load-in on Friday and the load-out on Sunday.

Here are the details:

What: Cottonwood Art Festival

Where: Richardson's Cottonwood Park on Belt Line just east of Coit. The Troop 1001 tent is at the south end of the park.

Wear: Class A uniform, if you have one; a Troop 1001 Class B tee shirt is a good second choice if you don't; otherwise, wear comfortable work clothes.

Friday, Oct 6, 10:00 am - 9:00 pm: Load-In. Assist the artists in moving their art and equipment and help them set up their tents. Adults only during school hours. Adults and scouts after school. Adults collect tips from the artists.

Saturday, Oct 7, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm: Scouts: sell bottled water from the scout tent, run errands for the artists. Adults: act as gatekeepers at the beer garden (starting at 11:00 am) to keep the drinks inside the garden. This is a key service the city expects of us. Booth sit for artists' breaks.

Sunday, Oct 8, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm: Same as Saturday. Scouts run errands and sell water, adults booth sit and watch the gates at the beer garden.

Sunday, Oct 8, 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Load-out. Adults and scouts help the artists tear down, pack up and load up. The troop helps the city manage traffic by issuing gate passes to the artists when their stuff is packed and waiting at the curb. Adults collect tips from the artists. This is an action-packed evening and having all hands present helps move the artists quickly.

So expect a call this week and be prepared to put in lots of hours this weekend. It's a great community service, the festival is fun, and...

it beats selling candy bars at work.
