Hello all Scouts and Scouters,
I hope this note reaches you enjoying a wonderful wet summer.
The Patrol Leaders Council met to set next season's schedule. We have an exciting
plan which we will share with the scouts at Group Dynamix when we meet for our first
overnighter on September 1st.
Our next committee meeting will be July 18th at 7:00pm at the Trinity Bible Church.
We will be discussing troop committee assignments and next year's schedule. All
families should have at least one representative. We would like to extend a special
invitation to all new scout parents to attend.
Family involvement in scouting is one of the secrets to an individual scout's success.
Get involved. Scouting is fun with a purpose.
I look forward to seeing you Wednesday July 18th at the church.
Yours in Scouting,
Scoutmaster Coon

Summer is here, but you don't have to remain stuck in front of a video game until September. Here are some opportunities to sharpen your Scouting skills and give your thumbs a rest.
Merit Badge College—Many classes are already filled, but Scouts age 13 and up can enroll in one or more merit badge classes or add their names to a wait list. This year, two sessions are being held: July 16-20 at the Eastfield Campus (Mesquite) of the Dallas County Community Colleges and July 23-27 at the Spring Creek Campus (Plano) of the Collin County Community College. Registration started June 6 so sign up as soon as possible. Classes are small and fill up quickly.
Golden Acorn—This leadership training is for boys who are both First Class rank or above and age 13 or above who are in leadership roles or want to prepare for one. Six sessions, five days each, are scheduled during the month of July at Camp James Ray. Three sessions are already filled, so sign up as soon as possible.
- Be prepared:
- Read about it. Be sure to read the rules, parents' letter, and equipment list.
- Register
- Bring a signed Class 2 medical form (doctor's signature) with the Class 1 portion also signed by your parents. If you went to summer camp, contact Scoutmaster Coon early if you need a copy of your current Class 2 form.
Stay tuned—check this article frequently for new activities and opportunities.

Now that summer camp is just a happy memory, read over the news that was sent from camp by email. More photos are available at this link.

Subject: Hello from Summer Camp!
From: JD Miller
Hi folks,
Just a note to let you know things are great here at Hale Scout Reservation
(HSR). We had a great bus ride up, enjoying the scenery as we rolled
along... And we stayed high and dry in the rain.
Check in was easy, they didn't let us hike our packs to the campsite, as
they had something else in mind, a three hour hiking tour of the the camp
and all its facilities. Well, we might have missed our backing experience on the way in, but we did
get to hike, and hopefully, we can backpack out.
Our troop is one of the largest in camp. Only one other troop arrived by
bus, and they were from Texas too. It seems most of the troops here are from
Texas. Maybe the folks who run this place took a page from the OU Football
recruiting manual? Needless to say, we are being treated very well. The
CAMP DIRECTOR comes by our breakfast table EVERY MORNING and ask how we are
doing, and if we need anything. Amazing.
We also notice the boys here are much more polite and respectful. When
scout signs go up (calling for quiet) it usually only takes a moment or two
to shush the whole group... Inside or out!
Staff here is awesome! They are all college age kids, and really know their
stuff. One mentioned he was recruited from Texas camps, where he started
staffing at a very young age. Anyway, they are very helpful, and know their
stuff too. They are also very organized. Things just seem to always go
right, except when they took our bags to Troop 1001 --Longhorn Council--
campsite during check in. Well, they got that fixed in short order too, and
we were not missing one piece.
The weather has been awesome too. Sure, we have had all that rain you guys
are getting in Dallas, just a few hours later, but it is so cool in the
evening that one MUST sleep under some covers to fend off the cool air. What
a switch from Constintin, where one just couldn't get cooled off anywhere.
Well, in closing, a couple of photos are attached. One is a "form up"
moment where the troop is preparing to depart camp to go to dinner (notice
the Class "A" uniform?). The other is a shot down a long sidewalk going
down a steep hill toward the lake, and the Aquatics area. This will give you
some idea as to the terrain- very hilly, and quite lush and green.
More to come...

A fellow scouter has asked for our assistance in an Eagle project. Jared C's brother James
is a member of another troop. Unfortunately, his troop is smaller than 1001 and he has a
shortage of manpower. So he could use the aid of volunteers from Troop 1001.
What: James C’s Eagle Project
James needs scouts to help him with his Eagle Project. Needs help rebuilding parts of an
old playground fence. Will be hard labor, and power tools will need to be used. Older
boys preferred. Dads welcome.
Where: Richardson East Church of Christ on Cambell between Plano Road and Owens
When: Saturday, June 9, 1:00 to 6:00 pm (After ACT for those taking it)
Notes: Wear old used clothing and bring water bottle(s), sun screen, and a hat.
If you, or your dad, has any electric sanders, power saws, regular saws, or hammers,
please bring them. Donuts will be provided.
Comments from Nik: One day, you will hopefuly do an Eagle project of your own, and when you do you
will truly appreciate those who volunteer their help. Keeping in mind that a scout is helpful,
I ask that if you aren't busy just go there and pitch in for a little while. And when you do go
be sure he knows you're from Troop 1001 so that later they might return the favor, should we need it.

Updated information about summer camp will be posted as it becomes available. Please check back here frequently to keep abreast of changes and additional detail.
For now, the important information is contained in the information sheet handed out to parents at the meeting held May 21. It includes a packing list and other information summer campers and their parents need to know. If you did not attend the meeting, then please review the sheet carefully.
Every scout must have a current Class 1 medical form signed and dated by a parent on or after June 3, 2006 and must have a current Class 2 physical signed and dated by a physician on or after June 3, 2004. Both forms are available here.
The summer camp roster lists medical form status and merit badge sign-ups by scout.
Adult leaders under 40 need the same medical forms as scouts. Leaders over 40 must have a Class 3 physical signed and dated by a physician on or after June 3, 2006.
More information about Hale Scout Reservation is available at this link and in the Leader's Guide.

Hello all Scouts and Scouters,
We wrapped up the Spring Scout season with a great Court of Honor that will be hard to match.
Thank you to all that made it the great team effort that it was.
A special thanks to Kane K. for finishing out his term as SPL with the same charisma and
strength he displayed all year as Senior Patrol Leader. Kane set the bar high for Nick K as SPL.
I look forward to seeing the NAD team (Nick, Alby/Alex, Daniel) steer troop 1001 through
new adventures starting with Summer Camp 2007 on May 27th.
Monday night there is a summer-camp-only meeting. There will be no regular meeting. All
scouts and adults attending camp and one or more parents representing each scout attending
camp should plan to meet at the TBC Monday May 21st at 7pm at the Trinity Bible Church.
Each scout and scouter will need an up to date BSA physical form on file. Please bring your
forms Monday night.
Here is the word from camp about physicals:
All scouts and adult leaders at Hale must have a completed Boy Scouts of America
physical examination form on file at the Health Lodge. Adults 40 years of age and older must have a
physical examination each year and use the
Personal Health and Medical Record Form Class 3
(No.334112) . Scouts and adults under 40 use the
Class 2 physical examination form (No. 33414) . If a
scout or adult under 40 has had a physical examination within the past 36 months, they can attach a
copy of that physical to a new No. 33414 and only need to complete the Class 1 Personal Health and
Medical History portion. ALL physical forms for minors MUST be signed by the parent of guardian.
Adults MUST sign their own physical. Physical forms will be returned to the troop at checkout.
A complete gear list and schedule will be available Monday night. I look forward to seeing
many of you there.
Yours in Scouting,
Scoutmaster Coon

Update May 10: The link below to invite yourself was broken but now is fixed. If you have received an emailed invitation, the link in it is custom for you but once you follow it to the Evite web site, there is an option to invite someone else. Please do respond to the email, yes or no--it makes the organizers' jobs much easier.
Troop 1001 cordially invites you and your family to our spring Court of Honor.
A catered dinner will be served at 6:00 pm with the Court of Honor following at 7:00 pm.
Parents, siblings, and extended family are invited to celebrate the Scouts'
achievements, welcome new leaders, and join in fellowship with
all the people who are part of Troop 1001. The program will include a
slide show of the year's activities and will feature several special guests.
Macaroni Grill will cater. Dinner cost: $9.00 per person,
including scouts. Children under 10: no charge.
Members of the Troop 1001 family should have already received an electronic invitation from Evite.com. Please follow the link in the invitation message and RSVP (accept or regrets) as soon as possible, preferably by Sunday, May 6 so we can have a headcount for the caterer. Be sure to tell us how many persons to expect. If you did not receive an invitation from Evite then Invite Yourself.
